Kali Slaymaker is an Iowa City wedding photographer but travels often. Traveling fuels my spirit and creative energy and because of this I love to shoot destination weddings and elopements. My photography + editing style is emotive, vibrant, and earthy. I believe in creating a wedding day that reflects your relationship and I focus on capturing your candid moments versus having only perfectly posed images. Ellie and Sean had such a laidback, joyous, FUN wedding day yesterday. They planned an outdoor ceremony and the forecast called for RAIN all day. However, it held off until RIGHT after the ceremony - the backdrop had some stormy clouds brewing. It was the perfect timing and I think a sign from the universe blessing them. The storm also blew out the venue’s electricity, but they ate their tacos by candle light and the amazing venue team at @koruberryfarm had generators so Sean’s brother’s band could play and get the party started!🎉💃🏻 I feel so blessed to spend time with such kind people on their wedding day. I also super appreciate when they feed me tacos and Costco chocolate cake 🙃 Who else was pleasantly surprised with the forecast yesterday?🙋🏻‍♀️
Dads are the best. This wedding had so many sweet moments between Kelsee and her dad. Happy #fathersday to all the fathers, dads, and father-figures today!
Headed out to a gorgeous wedding today!! I’m hoping for very little rainy and just appreciating this pretty overcast sky 🙏🏻 I’m so thankful to get to be a part of people’s special days. As a photographer, you can fall into the trap of thinking it’s another day, but it is THE day for the couple and their loved ones. And I think that’s pretty freakin rad that we get to be there for it and preserve those emotions 🙌🏼 Are you headed to a wedding today as a guest or photographer?

This Hawaii wedding reception had the prettiest details 😍 I love design and home interiors so seeing what a couple chooses for their reception design is always super exciting. I’m all about choosing things that bring you JOY. For some couples that means just plates, candles, and bottles of wine. Others it’s gorgeous, carefully crafted decor that makes them giddy. Hey there engaged folk. I’m going to let you in on a secret. Your wedding day can be exactly as you want it. YOU HEARD ME RIGHT. Despite what the wedding industry is telling you, you don’t have to have it all. The wedding party. The expensive a$$ cake simply because it has “wedding” in front of the word cake 😂 The extravagant dress. Tons of decor on your tables. You don’t even have to have guests. While it’s perfectly 100% okay if you want ALL of the above and think planning a wedding is AMAZING.... there’s also a lot of people who don’t. Yet this industry tries to fit you into a mold more than most. We don’t celebrate the simple enough. The two people in love, wearing what they want, writing hand written vows from their heart, under the big beautiful sky type of wedding. I don’t have “ideal clients”. You don’t have to only want one or the other. I just gravitate towards people who do what makes them happy for their big day. Why? Because they’re less stressed. They’re having FUN. Their face is lit up all damn day because the only thing that matters right now is what’s right in front of them. My clients will tell you I’m laid back - you’ll never feel stress or pressure from me. I make sure I cover all my bases so you’re well prepared and just have a goood time on your day and I capture it with a camera in hand. Is there anything more glorious than that golden sunset light and a gorgeous couple? The answer is no. Well especially if you’re a photographer 😂 This time of year is BUSY. Can you imagine having this view on your wedding day?😍 Hawaii was always one of those places on my “bucket list”. Growing up, I didn’t travel much beyond the Midwest and a few trips to visit family in Colorado. So the idea of flying all the way to Hawaii, that’s so glamorized in TV and movies, seemed exotic and like a good goal. Though I wasn’t sure when or how. Then, Chance and I were like hmmm how about that for a honeymoon? But after planning a destination wedding and what not we went the cheaper no planning route of an all inclusive (still a fave though!!). Let me just say when I first started this photography journey of mine never did I imagine this camera would bring me to Hawaii to second shoot for the amazingly talented @gracetphotography and book another incredible Hawaii wedding with the sweetest couple the next year. BUT I believed in myself. I worked damn hard. I put out into the universe that I wanted to take my talents to incredible places like HAWAII. And it HAPPENED. So often we try to play our dreams down. We take the safe route or don’t let people know how bad we want something so we don’t put ourselves out there. I could have never launched my business in fear of no one booking or people not liking my work. BUT I DID. And WOW did it change my life in so many positive ways. So no matter what you’re wanting right now in life - I’m giving you permission to GO FOR IT. Do it and don’t apologize. YOU CAN DO IT GIRLFRIEND!!
These two get married this month and I can’t wait 😍🎉
I don’t even know where to begin with Mack and Michael’s incredible wedding day in Colorado. They spent their day with their closest friends and family getting married in a beautiful outdoor park by a rushing river. They wanted to spend some alone time and share their first dance in the mountains so we headed out to RMNP after the ceremony. They ended the night by eating Michael’s grandma’s homemade enchiladas (best I’ve ever had 10/10). It was such a peaceful day and I felt so lucky to be a part of it and capture the moments and emotions of the day. It was also really special because it reminded me of Chance and my wedding almost two years ago to the day in the Colorado mountains. Mack and Michael gifted us socks with Fletcher’s face on it for our anniversary 😍 like what it’s their wedding day and they’re giving us such a sweet gift. Just two beautiful souls and I can’t wait to share an even bigger preview tonight!!
